Coalition for Democracy in Liberia


The Liberia Democratic Institute currently serves as the chairman of this coalition. Working in partnership with the West Africa Network for Peace-building and the Inter Religious Council of Liberia, LDI vice chaired a consortium of the three networks funded by the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs to monitor and report on the 2005 elections.

The National Committee for Elections Monitoring (NACEM) monitored all activities of the elections and successfully influenced mass citizen turnout and the peaceful conduct of the elections.

Transitional Justice Working Group


LDI is a founding member of the Transitional Justice Working Group, which conducted a national research on transitional justice issues, drafted the Truth and Reconciliation Bill and raised nationwide public awareness for its engrossment/ enactment as well as public acceptance.

Global Call to Action against Poverty Liberia National Coalition (GCAP LINC)


GCAP LIBERIA is a socio-economic policy advocacy and research organization that is working to stimulate citizens raise their voices on the eradication of poverty. It is a member of the global GCAP, which has presence in more than 80 countries worldwide. The Liberia Democratic Institute provided secretariat space and served as organizing chairman.

Publish What You Pay Liberia Coalition


PWYP Liberia Coalition is part of the global coalition, Publish What You Pay that was launched in June 2002 to campaign for transparency over oil, gas and mining companies’ payments to and transactions with governments on a country-by-country basis. The PWYP campaign is led by an international coalition of over 300 non-government organizations from over 50 countries. PWYP seeks mandatory disclosure of what governments earn and the publishing of what companies generate or give to government.

Liberia Civil Society Budget Network


The network is a part of the West African Budget Transparency Initiative (WABTI), which is a network of more than 11 West African Countries striving to foster transparency in the budgetary process in West Africa so the larger public can have a say in it thereby having greater impact on the lives of the citizens.

Liberia Consortium for National Dialogue


The Liberia National Dialogue Project is to shortly be implemented by seven national partners in collaboration with a Swiss-based International Organization named and styled as Interpeace. Other participating NGOs in the consortium include the Foundation for International Dignity (FIND), Inter Religious Council of Liberia, West Africa for Peacebuilding (WANEP), Women NGO Secretariat, Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding and Resource Center.

Community Governance and Advocacy Working Group


This is a consortium of seven NGOs working on governance, peacebuilding, rights monitoring and protection, and working with marginalized and excluded groups to take a stake in the overall governance of the state. The participating NGOs include FIND, FORHD, AFELL, DEN-L, PAP, NARDA AND LDI. It is being funded by the Inter Church Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO).

Interchurch Organization for Development Cooperation (ICCO)


Since 2005 LDI entered into partnership with ICCO in support of its Peace-building, governance and Reconciliation Program. Within the framework of the partnership, ICCO supported LDI peace-building and reconciliation actions through sports and youth development. The pilot project was implemented in the Northern Region for six months and the second phase implemented in the Southeastern County of Sinoe.

At the close of the pilot phases, ICCO and LDI signed a two and half years Community Governance and Advocacy Project currently being implemented in Konobo and Tchien Districts in Grand Gedeh County. The project seeks to support the establishment of community-based governance structures to enable them understand the forest law reform process and to promote transparency and accountability in forest resource benefit sharing scheme.

National Endowment for Democracy (NED)


Since 2006, LDI is promoting policy dialogue between Liberia’s 52nd Legislature and constituent communities in thirteen of Montserrado County electoral districts. The dialogues and debates are held in an interactive town hall meeting setting with the overriding objective of promoting accountability and participatory decision making in government.

The meetings primarily target UN supported District Development Committees (DDC) which are set-up to serve as vehicle of engagement at the community level.


Partnership for Transparency Fund


In November 2008, the Partnership for Transparency Fund and the Liberia Democratic Institute signed a partnership agreement to conduct study on the implementation of the County Development Fund. The study seeks to examine the quality of local communities’ participation, duty bearers’ accountability to the communities and the degree of transparency in the implementation of the Fund.


Fauna and Flora International


Failed promises in relations to community benefits on land use, the absence of clearly defined title and tenure policies to protect the rights of resource-based communities triggered an intervention to conduct a study on factors hampering peaceful conservation at the Sapo National Park.

Predicated on this, the Liberia Democratic Institute and Fauna and Flora International signed a one year grant agreement on March 2008 to promote communities’ participation in the management of the Sapo National Park and to interrogate the conflict factors in and around the Park.


Ghana Center for Democratic Development


In November 2008, the Liberia Democratic Institute and the Center for Democratic Development signed a grant agreement to commission a study on the quality of governance and life in Liberia.

Commissioned under the auspices of Afrobarometer research with covery in more than 20 countries, Afrobarometer national partner in Liberia is the Liberia Democratic Institute.


TIRI


In February 2009, the Liberia Democratic Institute and TIRI signed a grant agreement to promote transparency and accountability in the provision for social services to communities. The Pro-poor integrity intervention focuses on four sectors including health, education, water and sanitation and social protection.

The project targets four districts in Grand Gedeh and Sinoe Counties.

Liberia Community Infrastructure Program/USAID


Between 2004 and 2006 June, LCIP/USAID was LDI’s biggest donor implementing a total of six projects in Bong and Montserrado Counties. The LCIP/USAID projects were peace-building and democratic culture building through leadership training and empowerment. The projects have since ended in June, 2006.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs


NDI supported LDI outreach activities on the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) in Bong and Nimba Counties. It was conducted through town meetings - creating interface between warlord in the Transitional Government and their home communities to promote a successful to a democratically elected government.

The project was implemented in 2005 and has since ended.


United Nations Development Program


Between 2005 and 2007, UNDP supported LDI voters’ and civic education efforts in southeastern Liberia. The projects targeted local community leaders and marginalized groups including, youths and rural women to help them claim stake in democratic representation and participation. Through this intervention, political leaders including lawmakers are brought face-to-face with their constituent communities – using town meetings to dialogue and debate public policy and their implications.

Also, with UNDP support, LDI facilitated the development of a National Civic Education Master Plan for Liberia. The plan is the national framework for the teaching of civic education in schools and in rural communities.


OXFAM GB Liberia


LDI entered partnership with OXFAM GB in July to provide capacity building support to GCAP LIBERIA and raise awareness on the GEMAP and its implementation. Under the grant LDI/GCAP LINC launched a civil society monthly forum to dialogue and debate the implementation of the GEMAP and providing the platform for CSOs representative at the GEMAP to give feedback.

LDI/GCAP LINC also launched 24 community forums which were held in communities and academic institutions in Montserrado and four other counties. The project has since ended in December, 2006.
